About Indented Head Yacht Club

Indented Head is the home of Indented Head Yacht Club (IHYC) and is arguably the best location for off-the-beach (OTB) sailing in Victoria, boasting clean and clear waters, a soft white sandy beach and a superb grassed rigging area.

The wonderful variety of sailing conditions is just the icing on the cake.

IHYC has great facilities with male and female toilets and changing rooms, hot showers and a canteen. There is a BYO bar and an observation deck/sailors lounge where one can watch the sailing or the kids swimming.

Indented Head is also a great beach for swimming, with a shallow bay and little current. There’s also a camping ground right next door, which is open over the season.

IHYC welcomes all sailors, from beginners to international champions. We run Olympic courses and have a range of different classes to compete against, including the Olympic class ILCA, as well as Tasers, Sabres, Impulses and Optis.

THE INDENTED HEAD YACHT CLUB

There are some places that are simply buildings. And there are places where something much bigger happens.

Indented Head Yacht Club is one of those places. Perched beside the pristine waters of Port Phillip Bay — white sand beneath our feet, boats bobbing patiently on the water — it is difficult to imagine a more beautiful place to gather.

During sailing season, the Club is alive with activity. From beginners nervously learning which end of the boat is supposed to point forward, to seasoned sailors and international champions.

The grassed rigging area soon becomes a hive of activity. Boats being rigged. Sails being raised.

Young sailors discover the thrill of harnessing the wind for the first time. Experienced sailors share their knowledge. Competitive sailors endeavour to shave precious seconds off the finish. And those simply happy to be out on the water, letting the wind decide where the day might take them.

Indented Head Yacht Club is a place where sailing is shared.

Learn to Sail introduces children and adults to a whole new world. A nervous beginner becomes a sailor. A child discovers independence. An adult discovers that learning something new can be both exhilarating and humbling, and age is largely a state of mind.

Before long, someone who once stood nervously on the shore is out there on the Bay, sails full and smiling from ear to ear.

Sailing is about far more than boats. It is about learning new skills. Respecting the water. Taking a chance. And discovering what can happen when you are willing to give something a go.

The Bay is a wonderful teacher. Sometimes calm. Sometimes wild. Always beautiful.

It is easy to take a place like this for granted. There are gentle breezes that fill the sails just enough.

And winds that have everyone suddenly moving with considerably more purpose. Either way, there is always a story afterwards.

Sail Bellarine celebrates everything good about sailing — friendship, fun and spectacular racing.

Regattas bring another level of excitement. Boats arrive from near and far. Sails fill the horizon.

There is competition, of course. But there is also camaraderie. A helping hand when a boat needs launching. Advice freely given — whether requested or not. Stories exchanged. Meals shared. And friendships strengthened by a common love of the water.

Behind every successful sailing day and community event stands an army of volunteers. The organisers. The course setters. The cooks. The people who arrive early and stay late, quietly packing up long after everyone else has gone home. The people who know where everything is and collate the inevitable paperwork.

Without them, very little else would happen and chaos would probably reign.

These are the moments that make a Club. Not the building. Not the boats. Not even the magnificent view. It is the people.

The generosity of the Club reaches far beyond sailing. Throughout the year, the clubrooms and foreshore become the setting for fundraising and community events, bringing people together for causes close to their hearts.

The Wreck to Reef Open Water Swim brings hundreds of participants to the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula, challenging themselves in the waters of the Bay. It is a spectacular event. A logistical challenge. And a magnificent example of people working together.

The Indented Head Yacht Club has become a gathering place for people of all ages and all walks of life. Children discovering confidence. Teenagers finding independence. Families sharing experiences. Older members passing on knowledge accumulated over a lifetime. Newcomers finding friendship. And those who have lived here forever still finding new reasons to be involved.

There is something wonderfully special about watching people come together around a shared love of the water. And everyone has something to offer.

Sailors and swimmers understand each other so well. Both know that nature takes centre stage. Both understand challenge. Both know the exhilaration of stepping outside your comfort zone.

At Indented Head Yacht Club, the wind fills the sails, the Bay fills the soul, and the people fill your heart.

We come for the water. We stay for the community.
